Some people move through these changes with little difficulty, while others feel overwhelmed long before the transition even happens. Neither response is wrong; our brains simply process change differently.

Why Do Transitions Feel So Hard?

There isn't one single reason. Usually, several brain and nervous system processes happen simultaneously.

1. The Brain Loves Predictability

Our brains are designed to keep us safe. Predictability tells our nervous system: "I know what happens next. I'm okay."

Unexpected change creates uncertainty. Uncertainty requires the brain to gather new information, make decisions, adjust expectations, and monitor for potential danger. For some people, this happens effortlessly. For others, especially those with anxiety, ADHD, autism, or trauma histories, uncertainty feels exhausting.

2. Executive Function Has to Work Overtime

Transitions rely heavily on executive functioning skills.

These include:

  • shifting attention

  • planning

  • working memory

  • organizing

  • emotional regulation

  • impulse control

  • task initiation

Someone with ADHD isn't simply "forgetting."

Their brain is rapidly trying to answer questions like:

  • What am I doing?

  • What comes next?

  • Where do I need to be?

  • What supplies do I need?

  • How long will this take?

  • How do I get started?

That mental load can become overwhelming, which can lead to procrastination, task avoidance, or emotional dysregulation.

3. Emotional Attachment to the Current Activity

Many people become deeply engaged in preferred activities. Stopping doesn't just mean ending an activity.

It also means letting go of:

  • enjoyment

  • comfort

  • predictability

  • focus

  • regulation

For autistic individuals, transitions may interrupt routines that help them feel safe. For ADHD brains experiencing hyperfocus, stopping can feel physically uncomfortable.

4. The Nervous System May Interpret Change as Stress

If someone has experienced trauma or chronic stress, their nervous system may become especially sensitive to uncertainty. Even ordinary changes can trigger a stress response and the body may react before the person consciously understands why.

They might experience:

  • racing heart

  • stomach aches

  • irritability

  • freezing

  • tears

These reactions are signs that the nervous system is trying to protect them.

Why Neurodivergent Individuals Often Experience More Difficulty

Neurodivergent brains frequently process information differently—not incorrectly. Research suggests that many autistic individuals benefit from predictability and routine, while people with ADHD often experience challenges with task initiation, shifting attention, and managing executive functioning demands.

This means transitions require additional mental effort.

  • difficulty stopping preferred activities

What Happens During a Difficult Transition?

Transitions often follow a predictable pattern.

The brain anticipates change.

Thoughts may include:

  • I don't want this.

  • What if something goes wrong?

  • I'm not ready.

  • I don't know what to expect.

The body may already be entering a stress response.

During

Executive functioning becomes overloaded.

Emotions increase.

Behavior may look like:

  • arguing

  • refusing

  • crying

  • moving very slowly

  • shutting down

  • becoming distracted

  • asking repetitive questions

  • clinging to caregivers

After

Once the transition is complete, many people gradually regulate, while others may need extra time before feeling settled. This is why patience matters.

Signs Someone May Be Struggling With Transitions

Children may:

  • cry when leaving activities

  • resist getting dressed

  • refuse school

  • have frequent meltdowns

  • need repeated reminders

  • become physically clingy

Teens may:

  • procrastinate

  • isolate

  • become irritable

  • miss deadlines

  • avoid responsibilities

  • experience increased anxiety

Adults may:

  • feel overwhelmed by schedule changes

  • avoid appointments

  • procrastinate starting tasks

  • become exhausted after routine disruptions

  • struggle after vacations or holidays

How to Make Transitions Easier

The goal isn't eliminating discomfort; it's helping the nervous system feel safer while moving through change.

1. Give Predictable Warnings

Instead of:

"Time to go!"

Try:

  • "Ten more minutes."

  • "Five minutes."

  • "One more minute."

Visual timers often work even better than repeated verbal reminders.

2. Show What Comes Next

Knowing what follows reduces uncertainty.

Examples:

  • First dinner, then bath.

  • First homework, then outside time.

  • First school, then soccer practice.

Visual schedules can be especially helpful, whether this is a calendar on the wall or your own digital task-list.

3. Validate Feelings Before Problem-Solving

Instead of:

"You're fine."

Try:

"I know it's hard to stop when you're having fun."

Feeling understood often helps the brain regulate more quickly.

4. Keep Routines Flexible, Not Rigid

Consistency creates safety, but rigidity creates stress. Aim for predictable rhythms while allowing room for life's inevitable surprises. Think of routines as daily anchors or habits that guide you through your day.

For example:

Morning Routine:

  • Wake up

  • Bathroom

  • Breakfast

  • Get dressed

  • Backpack/Belongings

  • Leave

The exact timing can change without the entire routine feeling ruined.

5. Use Visual Supports

Visual information stays available longer than spoken directions.

Helpful tools include:

  • picture schedules

  • calendars

  • checklists

  • color-coded routines

  • transition cards

6. Build Regulation Into the Transition

Moving from one activity to another is easier when the body has a chance to regulate.

Ideas include:

  • deep breathing

  • stretching

  • jumping

  • wall pushes

  • carrying something heavy

  • calming music

  • sensory tools

  • mindful noticing ("Name five things you see.")

7. Practice During Calm Moments

Don't wait until emotions are high to practice creating calm and regulation. Practice through role-playing transitions, talk through the process of leaving an activity/event, or stick to predictable habits and routines. The brain learns through repetition.

8. Offer Choices When Possible

Control reduces stress.

Examples:

  • Do you want the blue shoes or the green shoes?

  • Do you want to walk or hop to the car?

  • Should we start with math or reading?

The transition still happens—but the person has agency.

What Doesn't Usually Help

When someone is overwhelmed, these responses often increase stress:

  • "You're overreacting."

  • "It's not a big deal."

  • "Just calm down."

  • "You're being difficult."

  • sudden demands

  • rushing

  • punishment for anxiety

  • removing all emotional support

Remember: Behavior is communication.

Instead of asking,

"How do I stop this behavior?"

Try asking,

"What is this behavior telling me?"

Supporting Yourself Through Transitions

Adults struggle with transitions too.

If you notice yourself avoiding tasks or feeling overwhelmed by change, try asking:

  • What part feels hardest?

  • Am I overwhelmed or unmotivated?

  • Do I need more information?

  • Do I need a smaller first step?

  • What would make this feel safer?

Small adjustments often make a significant difference.

When Extra Support May Be Helpful

Sometimes transition challenges become so intense that they interfere with daily life.

  • school refusal

  • severe anxiety

  • panic attacks

  • frequent meltdowns

  • relationship conflict
